Pepper Gladiator

Yellow sweet bell peppers differ from red varieties not only in their color. The main difference between them lies in the concentration of nutrients. Yellow peppers have more vitamin C and pectin, while red peppers have more beta carotene. That is why yellow sweet peppers are a godsend for people who eat healthy, as well as for people who are allergic to red vegetables. One of the most popular yellow peppers is the Gladiator variety.

Gladiator

Characteristics of the variety

The Gladiator pepper is the result of the labors of Dutch breeders. In terms of ripening, it belongs to the mid-season varieties. Gladiator peppers reach their technical maturity between 110 and 120 days after germination. Its plants are vigorous and spreading. Their average height will not exceed 55 cm. The gladiator is perfect both for a greenhouse and for open beds and film shelters.

Gladiator peppers have a truncated pyramidal shape. On its surface, in addition to a slight glossy shine, one can see a weakly pronounced ribbing. The color of the fruit changes depending on the degree of ripeness. Light green unripe peppers gradually turn yellow, acquiring a bright yellow color. Large Gladiator fruits can weigh up to 350 grams and wall thickness up to 13 mm. Their thick, dense flesh is incredibly tender and sweet with a slight peppery aroma. Its application is universal: from fresh consumption to conservation.

Important! Sweet pepper variety Gladiator is one of the record holders for vitamin C. With just one pepper a day, you can get a daily dose of this vitamin.

This sweet pepper variety has not only excellent taste characteristics, but also marketable ones. Its plants and fruits have good resistance to many diseases of this crop, in particular to verticellosis. Among other things, Gladiator is a very productive variety, allowing you to harvest from 9 to 12 kg per square meter.

Growing recommendations

Attention! Seedlings of Gladiator sweet peppers begin to cook from mid-February to mid-March.

Seeds can simply be planted in prepared containers, but such planting will not be able to provide high germination. Experienced gardeners recommend preparing seeds in advance:

  1. All seeds are immersed in a container of water. Seeds that float to the surface are empty and unsuitable for planting.
  2. Soaking seeds in water for a period not exceeding 2 days. To increase the rate of their germination, any growth stimulant can be added to the water.
  3. Treatment of seeds with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. After that, they should be rinsed with warm water.

Such preparation of seeds will allow not only to speed up the appearance of the first shoots, but also to strengthen their immunity.

Important! Some growers do their own seed treatment. Information about this can be found on their packaging. Such seeds should simply be planted in the ground without additional procedures.

When planting, the seeds of the Gladiator variety are buried no more than 1.5 cm. Before the first shoots appear, they are covered with polyethylene or glass. For successful germination, they should provide a temperature of 23 to 28 degrees.

Young seedlings are planted permanently at the age of 60 days. The gladiator is a fairly thermophilic variety, so the landing site should be sunny and sheltered from the wind. Before planting this variety, it is recommended to apply any organic fertilizer in the fall. If a crop rotation is organized on the site, then planting of pepper is best done after the following crops:

  • legumes;
  • cucumbers;
  • root crops and others.

Planting sweet peppers after green manure shows good results. In addition, they can be used to mulch the soil.

Regardless of whether the Gladiator is planted in open or closed ground, there should be 35 - 40 cm of free space between neighboring plants.

Advice! The dimensions of the Gladiator bushes allow planting from 4 to 5 plants per square meter.

The Gladiator sweet pepper variety is undemanding to care, but for abundant fruiting it must provide:

  • Lots of light and warmth... If the peppers are planted in the open field, then at first they can be covered with foil at night. When planting in a greenhouse, you need to remember about regular ventilation. This is especially important during the period of bud and fruit formation.
  • Regular watering... As a rule, in our climate, the frequency of watering this crop will be at least 2 times a week. In this case, the top watering can be carried out only until the moment of flowering. After the formation of buds, watering is carried out only at the root. For each plant of the Gladiator, the water norm is from 1 to 3 liters. It should only be warm. Watering with cold water will have a negative effect on the root system of the plants.
  • Regular loosening and weeding... Soil mulching can replace these procedures. For sweet peppers Gladiator in the form of mulch, straw or green manure is perfect.
  • Top dressing with mineral and organic fertilizers... They must be carried out 2 weeks after planting, during the period of the beginning of the formation of buds, and then during the period of active growth of fruits. Excellent results are obtained with the use of poultry manure, slurry, and superphosphate.

With proper care, the Gladiator sweet pepper variety can produce abundant fruit from mid-July to October.

Testimonials

Vyacheslav, 54 years old, Vladimir
Gladiator chose the sweet pepper variety after reading its description. I prepared the seedlings by mid-May and planted them on the beds under the film. The bushes grew sprawling, but not very tall. On each at a time, up to 5 fruits of rather large sizes were formed. They taste juicy and sweet. The flesh is thick and firm. The variety is good.

I'm planting him for the third year. I really like the fact that it bears abundant fruit and has large fruits. All neighbors celebrate their beautiful yellow color. At home, we grow it in a greenhouse along with other varieties. By trial and error, we chose those that do not pollinate with each other. From leaving we have only watering and one feeding with some kind of organic matter. At the same time, the harvest is always excellent - we harvest until the end of September. I highly recommend trying this variety, you will not regret it.
Anna, 24 years old, Novomoskovsk
This year this variety was planted for the first time. The seedlings were planted in the greenhouse, as always, for the May holidays. In the description for the variety it was written that the bushes are up to 55 cm, but we have them stretched out a little. Maybe what was missing is hard to say. Gladiator's peppers are very pretty. They are large and yellow. The pulp is juicy and thick. Harvested until mid-October. We will plant more.
