Raspberry Volnitsa

It is difficult to imagine a garden without raspberry bushes, because the fruits are liked not only by children, but also by adults. The assortment of varieties is varied, when choosing, not only the characteristics of the bushes are taken into account, but also the size, taste of the berry, and care features.

Malina Volnitsa has long settled in garden plots. The description of the variety, photos and reviews of gardeners presented below are just for those who are not yet familiar with the berry bush. We hope that raspberries will have new fans.

A bit of history

The first description of the raspberry variety was given in 1994. Volnitsa was created by scientists breeders from Bryansk S. D. Aitzhanova, V. L. Kulagina under the leadership of I. V. Kazakov. They are the “parents” of many non-remontant varieties of raspberries, including Volnitsy.

An interesting parental chain is being built: "dad and mom" are raspberry varieties Bryanskaya and Brigantine... And the “grandmother” of Volnitsy is called Novost Kuzmina (an old Russian variety), it was from her that the Bryansk raspberry was obtained.

Important! When the trials were completed, the new raspberry variety took its place in the State Register in 2007. Volnitsa is a patented berry bush.

Description

The Wolnitsa raspberry variety is not remontant. The plant is recommended for growing in almost all regions of Russia. Description, photos and reviews of gardeners will help you understand the characteristics of the variety.

Bushes

Raspberry Volnitsa is of medium height, reaches 170-200 cm. Shoots are slightly inclined, as if freely scattered, hence the name. Attention! The Volnitsa variety bears fruit on the shoots of the second year of life.

The stems of the raspberry variety are of medium thickness, at first brown with a waxy coating, the next year they are light brown. Shoots are covered with purple thorns from top to bottom, but they are small, not very prickly. There are many leaves, they are densely located. The leaf blades are deep green in color with a clearly visible corrugation. Raspberry leaf curl is average.

As gardeners note in the reviews, and this is noticeable in the photo of the Volnitsa variety, there is no particular thickening of the bush. After all, the growth of replacement shoots in raspberry Volnitsa is moderate, no more than nine per season.

That is why the mother bush receives enough nutrition and gives all its strength to fruiting. Although, if it is necessary to quickly multiply the raspberry variety Volnitsa on a large scale, there will be not enough planting material.

The branches on which inflorescences appear are long, powerful. As a rule, up to 10-12 brushes are formed on one shoot, on which up to 20 berries are tied, as in the photo below.

Fruit

The berries of the variety are attractive in appearance, have the shape of a blunt cone. As gardeners note in the reviews, the fruits of raspberry Volnitsa always correspond to the description: they are even, without the slightest deviation. The weight of the berries ranges from 3-5 grams. Drupes are of the same size, hold tight to each other, do not crumble even after the raspberries are overripe.

When ripe, the fruits change color from light crimson to bright red. On the surface of the berries there is a slight pubescence, inherited by the variety Volnitsa from the raspberry Novost Kuzmina, which is considered a "grandmother". This feature of the raspberry fruit is clearly visible in the photo.

The taste of raspberries is sweet and sour, the aroma is subtle, barely perceptible. The pulp is tender, juicy. There are seeds on each drupe, but they are so small that they are not felt when eaten. Tasters rate the palatability of Volnitsa raspberries with four points out of five.

Characteristics

According to the description and photo, it is possible to visualize Volnitsa raspberries, but without characteristics it is difficult to make a choice of a variety for growing. Therefore, the features of the plant are given below, the advantages and disadvantages are indicated.

Advantages of the variety

  1. Raspberry ripening period is medium early, fruiting is extended.
  2. The yield is stable, up to 4 kg of tasty fruits are harvested from the bush. If all the norms of agricultural technology are observed, a higher yield can be obtained.
  3. The berries of the Volnitsa variety have universal application. Not only fresh raspberries are good. Delicious jam, compote is obtained from the fruit. Frozen and dried berries retain all their beneficial properties.
  4. Even overripe raspberries from the collection of I.V. Kazakov do not crumble, which is very attractive for gardeners who are unable to harvest as they ripen.
  5. The transportability of the variety is good. If the berry is not removed from the stalk, then it has not yet ripened.
  6. The Volnitsa variety is frost-resistant, winters well at temperatures up to 30 degrees, so raspberries can be grown in almost all regions of Russia.
  7. Many raspberry diseases bypass bushes and fruits. Of the pests, the kidney mite is annoying.

Minuses

Gardeners who have been working with the Volnitsa variety for many years do not notice any particular shortcomings, the reviews are mostly positive. If we talk about the cons of raspberries, then they are as follows:

  1. Sprawling and tall bushes need tying up.
  2. The raspberry harvest in Volnitsa, in comparison with modern varieties, is not that high.
  3. The presence of thorns along the entire length of the shoot.

Site selection

Raspberries are planted in fertile soil with enough moisture. But at the same time, groundwater should not come close to the root system, since fungal diseases can occur in swampy soil. Removed before landing weeds.

If the soil is peaty, then you need to add clay and manure. This organic matter will contribute to the development of microorganisms that decompose peat. When choosing a site for raspberries, Wolnitsa also take into account the factor that low planting sites are undesirable, since the bushes can be damaged by frost.

The best place to plant raspberries is along the fence on the south side of the site. In this case, the plants will be evenly lit throughout the day.

Advice! Planting raspberries of the variety is not recommended next to tomatoes, potatoes and strawberries.

Helpful hints:

Accommodation options

The method of planting raspberries Volnitsa depends on the size of the site. You can grow free-standing bushes or in a trench:

  1. Planting in separate bushes. It is necessary to dig holes 40x50 cm under the plants. Each of them is first filled with drainage, and then with fertile soil. There should be at least 100 cm between raspberry bushes, and up to two meters between rows. This distance is necessary for planting care.
  2. Into the trench. The trench method of growing raspberries of any varieties is the most common. This arrangement of bushes is more economical. Ditches for planting raspberries are located from north to south. Trenches should have a width of 50 cm, a depth of at least 45 cm.When planting, 40 cm is left between the bushes, and the next ditch is dug after 100 cm.

Drainage must be laid at the bottom of the trench. Fertile soil is poured on top, which includes organic matter or mineral fertilizers (depending on the preferences of gardeners).

Landing features

You can plant raspberries of the Wolnitsa variety in spring or autumn. But it is the autumn plantings that are considered the best options. You need to start work until the soil is frozen, so that the root system has time to take root. If raspberries are planted in spring, then very early, until the buds wake up.

Preparation of seedlings

Before planting, you need to cook not only the soil, but also the planting material. All the shoots are cut off from the seedling, only one, the strongest, is left. In addition, the stem must be shortened to a height of 20 cm.

Even if the planting material was taken directly from the garden, it still needs to be soaked in a nutrient mixture of mullein and clay. This procedure will strengthen the seedling's immunity, it will take root better.

Warning! In no case should the seedling be placed at the bottom of the planting pit and covered with earth.

How to plant raspberries correctly:

  1. Drainage needs to be laid at the bottom. Many gardeners advise using so-called firewood. These are twigs left over from tree pruning or pieces of boards, wood chips. They will decompose slowly, and bacteria developing on the tree will process organic matter into nutrients.
  2. The soil for filling a hole or trench is prepared from humus, compost. Drainage is sprinkled with a layer of earth and well filled with water. Superphosphate or potassium fertilizer is added on top. And only then a layer of fertile land. The roots of the raspberry seedling should not come into contact with mineral fertilizers, so as not to get burned.

In the center of the seat, a mound is made and seedlings are planted on it. The soil is poured on top and tamped well to squeeze out the air from under the raspberry root system. Watering abundantly will allow the roots to adhere better to the soil. When planting, the root collar of the seedling should be higher than the soil. It will settle a little after watering.

To retain moisture, the soil around the plantings is mulched with sawdust, straw or manure. If the planting of raspberries was carried out in October or early November (depending on the region), then the roots of the plant fall asleep 10 centimeters. This is necessary to cover the buds.

Care features

There are no particular difficulties in growing a plant. Even novice gardeners manage to get good harvests:

  1. Since the raspberry variety Wolnitsa is tall, it requires tying. Plants grown by the trench method are fixed on a trellis. A reliable stake is driven in next to single landings.
  2. Like any plants, plantings are watered as needed. The raspberry variety Volnitsa especially needs moisture during flowering and fruiting. In hot weather, watering is increased, you can also water the plants over the leaves in the early morning or after sunset.
  3. Volnitsa loves loose soil and does not tolerate weeds. Both types of work are performed after watering. Top dressing is also introduced on well-moistened soil twice a year: in July and August. The variety responds well to infusions of mullein, bird droppings and green grass.
  4. Sanitary pruning of bushes is carried out in the spring, removing diseased and frozen shoots. In the summer, the grown replacement branches are cut off so that they can branch out. This procedure also allows the shoots to mature well before winter.
  5. Variety Wolnitsa in one place can bear fruit up to 15 years. It is clear that during this time diseases and pests accumulate, despite the resistance and good immunity. Therefore, preventive procedures are an integral part of planting care. Traditional drugs are used, taking into account the recommendations for use.

Preparing for winter

In the fall, fruiting raspberry shoots are cut out at the root, and the young are bent to the ground. Work is carried out before the onset of frost. Flexible shoots are well laid, they do not break.

Advice! Despite the fact that the Volnitsa variety is winter-hardy, you should not leave the branches erect: the frosty wind can dry them out. Therefore, it is best to cover plantings for the winter.

In regions with abundant snow, there are fewer problems: it is enough to add it in winter. If the winters have little snow, the raspberries are covered with non-woven material, spruce branches on top, or earth. Full cover is performed with the onset of stable cold weather.
